SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped a road contest against the eighth-ranked Trinity Tigers, 14-2, on Wednesday evening.
Offense was hard to come by in the early going with Trinity leading 2-0 going into the fifth inning. However, the Tigers were able to plate five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to break open the game.
The Cowboys got on the board in the eighth inning when
Baylan Vaughan singled through the left side to drive in
Jacob Hollingsworth from second base after moving up on a wild pitch.
In the ninth inning, HSU added a run after Hollingsworth doubled off the wall to score
Karson Leatherwood.
Hollingsworth and Vaughan led the Cowboys with two hits each, and both driving in a run.
Brock Calvillo added two hits in the contest and now leads the team with 27 hits.
Jack Bussard came on in for relief for the Tigers and picked up his first win on the season. Bussard threw three and third innings allowing no hits and had four strikeouts.
Jake Trapani got his first start on the mound for the Cowboys. He went four innings allowing six runs and picked up the loss.
Coulter Maxson,
Brady Bennett,
Tristan Boedeker, and
Bowdy Shane all saw action out of the bullpen for HSU.
HSU fell to 3-12 on the year and will open up American Southwest Conference play in Marshall next Thursday against ETBU. Trinity improved to 16-5 with the win.
