ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team won two games of a doubleheader against the University of St. Thomas (Tx.) on Saturday for a sweep at Ellis Field on Cowgirl senior day.
The day was a pair of duels from the pitchers from Hardin-Simmons and St. Thomas. Base runners and runs were scarce between both teams on Saturday.
Haley Henson led off game one with a liner to left that hopped past the fielder allowing her to advance to third base.
Ava Dennis hit a single to drive in the Cowgirl run in the bottom of the first inning.
The Cowgirls scored a second run on a bloop double by
Jazlynn Cantu for an RBI in the fourth inning to make it 2-0.
Gabby Montanez pitched around eight St. Thomas hits for a complete game shutout and her ninth win of the year with a great defensive day from the Cowgirls. Montanez finished with two strikeouts.
The Cowgirls led early in game two of the day with an RBI from
Emily Jacobs on a double off the wall in the second inning.
The Celts of St. Thomas fired back in the fifth with two runs to take the lead 2-1 after five innings.
Cantu hit a home run to tie the ball game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning for Hardin-Simmons and senior
Caitlin Clem hit a walk-off home run to score two in the eighth inning for a 4-2 Cowgirl win in dramatic fashion at Ellis Field.
Akaysia Grogan pitched all eight innings for the Cowgirls in extras for the complete game win. She finished with one strikeout and just four hits allowed with no earned runs.
Senior
Haley Henson got a hit in game one and game two to extend her hitting streak to 21 games for the Cowgirls dating back to last year.
The Cowgirls win and improve to 16-3 on the season and will host Mary Hardin-Baylor to begin American Southwest Conference play on Friday starting with a doubleheader on Friday at 5/7 p.m. at Ellis Field on Grape Street.
