ABILENE, Texas – Jake Trapani pitched a complete-game and had three hits and drove in four runs as Hardin-Simmons' baseball team routed Howard Payne 17-2 in run-rule fashion on Saturday at Hunter Field.
Trapani had a double, triple and home run in the game and worked seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits to improve to 2-2 on the mound. He finished the game in 65 pitches.
He was one of 14 seniors honored after the game in a ceremony.
HSU jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Brock Calvillo and Trapani had RBI triples in the inning and
Justin Blancaflor and
Cannon Negron each had RBI singles.
After HPU scored a run on a Grant Pfaff sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning, the Cowboys scored four times in the bottom of the inning.
Luke Kirkbride had a two-run double and
Layden White a two-run single.
HSU added three more runs in the fifth on a Calvillo two-run home run and a Trapani home run. HSU added a run in the sixth on a wild pitch.
McGraw, Hollingsworth, Trapani, Negron had three hits each as HSU had 20 hits in the game.
Calvillo pushed his hitting streak to 16 games and he is hitting .440 on the year, which overtook ETBU's Luke Bumpas for the ASC hitting lead. He also leads the league with 59 hits. Vaughan has hit in 12 straight games.
Landon Prestage had two of the six HPU hits and Jack Shackelford took the loss on the mound with four runs on five hits in the first inning.
The Cowboys finished the regular season with a record of 11-24 and went 8-8 in conference. HPU fell to 9-30 overall and 1-15 in league play.
The two teams will play in the first round of the ASC tournament in Marshall on Thursday at 11 a.m. It will be a single-elimination game. The winner moves into the double elimination portion of the ASC Tournament and will play East Texas Baptist at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
