BELTON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped an American Southwest Conference doubleheader at Mary Hardin-Baylor, falling 3-1 and 10-3 on Thursday evening at Red Murff Field.
Justin Blancaflor had a sacrifice fly in the first inning to give the Cowboys an early lead. UMHB tied the game with a Riley Bender RBI single in the bottom of the first and scored a pair of runs in the third on a Carson Hagan RBI single and a Shane Melick RBI double.
Alex Carte went the distance for the Cowboys allowing, three runs on eight hits to fall to 2-5 on the year. James McGlumphy also threw a complete game, allowing one run over seven innings, scattering six hits and striking out eight.
Brock Calvillo and
Quincy McGraw had two hits each for the Cowboys and Hagan led UMHB with three hits.
In the second game, UMHB raced out to a 7-0 lead after three innings of the second game. HSU scored its lone runs in the top of the seventh inning, scoring a run on an error and two more on a
Brock Calvillo two-run single.
Calvillo had three of the six HSU hits.
Jacob Posey got the start and fell to 1-2 with the loss. He allowed seven runs in two innings. Freshman
Jack Kimsey had his best outing as a Cowboy, allowing two runs (one earned) in five innings of relief, while striking out six.
Brady Bennett worked the eighth and allowed an unearned run.
Kolby McBee earned the win for the Crusaders, allowing three unearned runs over six and two-third innings of work. Five different UMHB batters had two hits each in a 13-hit attack,
HSU is now 4-17 overall and 1-5 in league play. UMHB improved to 15-8 overall and 3-3 in conference action. The teams will play a single game on Friday at 6 p.m., weather permitting.
