BELTON, Texas – Jake Trapani threw a complete game and had three hits as Hardin-Simmons beat Mary Hardin-Baylor 4-2 on Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference action at Red Murff Field in Belton.
Trapani allowed just two runs in the game and scattered six hits while striking out four to improve to 1-2 on the year. It was just his third start of the year for the Cowboys on the mound. He also went 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of doubles and drove in a run.
He put the Cowboys on the board in the first inning with an RBI double. HSU added to the lead in the third on a
Layden White RBI single.
UMHB hit solo home runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game.
Karson Leatherwood had a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning and eventually came around and scored on a wild pitch.
Reid Cromie took the loss for UMHB as he allowed just two unearned runs in five innings of relief of starter Mason Semmelmann.
The Cowboys are now 6-17 overall and 3-5 in league play. HSU opened conference play against the two preseason favorites in the league race on the road. UMHB fell to 15-10 overall and 3-5 in league play.
HSU returns home this weekend for the first time since March 5 to play LeTourneau starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
