HOUSTON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl volleyball team played two matches Saturday, defeating Schreiner 3-1 and falling to the University of St. Thomas 3-2.
The Cowgirls took game one of the afternoon 3-1 over the Schreiner Mountaineers with set scores of 25-21, 25-20, 19-25, and 25-15.
The Cowgirls had 50 kills, nine service aces, and six blocks against Schreiner.
Leigh Jespersen and
Liz Keidl finished game one with double figure kills, with 15 and ten kills, respectively.
Jespersen also served three aces for Hardin-Simmons in the win and finished with 16 digs to lead the team.
Keatyn Rodgers led the Cowgirls with 23 assists.
Allison O'Shaughnessy finished the game with 15 assists for HSU.
Three Cowgirls had double-digit digs, including Jespersen with 16.
Ari Villanueva collected 15 digs and
Kat Martinez had 13 digs in the match against Schreiner.
The Cowgirls dropped the second game of the day 3-2 to the St. Thomas Celts in sets of 25-22, 21-25, 17-25, 25-23, and 15-10.
Hardin-Simmons had four with ten or more kills against UST,
Abbi Allen and Jespersen with 16 kills each,
Jadyn Hernandez with 11, and
Liz Keidl with ten kills.
Rodgers led with 28 assists and
Allison O'Shaughnessy had 18 assists.
Ari Villanueva had 15 assists.
Jespersen led with 23 digs against St. Thomas, while Villanueva collected 17 digs and
Brylee Pursley finished with 15 digs.
The Cowgirls ended the first weekend 3-1 and will travel to Baltimore next weekend to play at John's Hopkins for three games beginning at 3 p.m. on September 5 in Maryland.
