BELTON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl volleyball team came out of the gates quickly to sweep LeTourneau 3-0 on Friday afternoon playing at Mary Hardin-Baylor.
The Cowgirls led 3-2 in the first set before a 9-0 run to go up 12-2. HSU also pushed five straight points from 19-11 to 24-11 and later won 25-14 in a great opening set.
Hardin-Simmons trailed 3-2 in the second set before taking the lead 6-3 with a four-point run. The YellowJackets got back up to 17-13 before another Cowgirl push to tie the game 17-17. The Cowgirls took set three 25-22 in the end.
In set three, HSU was down 1-0 and then went up 5-1 quickly. Trailing late 22-20 to LeTourneau, the Cowgirls put together four points to take the lead 23-22 and eventually finished the sweep with a 26-24 win.
The Cowgirls finished the 3-0 win with 46 kills and led LeTourneau in the margin for services aces 8-4 and blocks 10-4.
Abbi Allen led the Cowgirls in kills with 12, hitting .235 on 34 attacks.
Liz Keidl swung for .381 with nine kills in 21 attacks and
Leigh Jespersen hit eight kills.
Avery Tumlinson finished with seven kills in eight swings, good for a .750 hitting percentage.
Keatyn Rodgers led the Cowgirls with 24 assists and
Allison O'Shaughnessy assisted 12 times.
Kat Martinez led the team on defense with 18 digs and Jespersen was second with 15 digs.
Jadyn Hernandez led with seven blocks while Allen finished with six total blocks.
The Cowgirls improved to 7-2 this season and will play Methodist at 9 a.m. Saturday and Alverno at 3:45 p.m., finishing up the weekend tournament at Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton.
