ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl basketball team won 60-52 over the East Texas Baptist Tigers in American Southwest Conference play on Saturday afternoon for a big win on Cowgirl senior day.
Hardin-Simmons honored six Cowgirl basketball seniors,
Abbie Crow,
Caroline Croft,
Savannah Bennett,
Grace Sims,
Allie Buchanan, and Sayler Beerwinkle.
The Cowgirls battled through a tough start shooting the ball, going 10-of-34 for 29 percent shooting in the first half. HSU went into half only trailing ETBU 28-25.
The Cowgirls turned it on in the second half on offense, shooting 13-of-30 for 43 percent, in order to win.
HSU had a big 3-pointer from
Avery Cathey to tie the game 43-43 early in the fourth quarter after trailing the second half until then.
The Cowgirls closed the game out with a 16-7 run over the Tigers, led by strong finishes from
Jacqueline Berry,
Caroline Croft, and
Savannah Bennett. The Cowgirls outscored ETBU 25-11 in the fourth quarter for the 60-52 win.
Bennett led the day for HSU with a career-high 14 points, shooting 7-for-12 from the floor and playing some great defense down low for the Cowgirls.
Croft ended with 13 points making 6-of-6 free throws, all down the stretch to ice the game in the win. Berry racked up 12 points despite being double-teamed down low all night against ETBU.
Hardin-Simmons senior day also included honoring the 20
th anniversary of the 2006 Cowgirl basketball NCAA Final Four team at halftime, including multiple HSU Athletics Hall of Fame members who made it back to be in the Mabee Complex on Saturday.
The Cowgirls continued ASC play undefeated and are now 16-3 and 2-0 in ASC play on the year, with their next game on Wednesday, Feb. 4 against Howard Payne at home at 5:30 p.m. at the Mabee Complex.
