JACKSON, Miss. – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team won two games on Friday, defeating Centenary 10-5 and Belhaven 11-2 on the road in Mississippi.
Hardin-Simmons struck first against Centenary in the morning game after
Kinzley Cantu led off with a double and
Emily Jacobs doubled later in the first inning for an RBI to lead 1-0.
Another lead-off double in the third inning by
Jazlynn Cantu ended in two more Cowgirl runs, with RBIs from
Grace Thompson and
Ella Salinas to go up 3-1.
Libby Chapman stole two bases before scoring on a wild pitch to start the fourth inning for HSU.
Ava Dennis singled for an RBI and
Kinzley Cantu finished the fourth with her second double of the game, with an RBI, making it 6-2 Hardin-Simmons.
Addyson Kahklen singled for two RBIs in the fifth inning, and Dennis added another RBI.
Kinzley Cantu singled for an RBI to make it 10-5 Cowgirls after five innings, which would be the final score in the win.
The Cowgirls finished with 15 hits and their pitcher
Gabby Montanez only allowed nine hits from Centenary in the complete seven innings pitched. She finished with three strikeouts and three earned runs allowed in the win.
Kinzley Cantu had a perfect 4-for-4 game at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBIs against Centenary.
Kahklen, Thompson, and
Jazlynn Cantu had two hits each for the Cowgirls. Kahklen and Dennis each chipped in two RBIs as well in game one.
Hardin-Simmons took down Belhaven by a final score of 11-2 in the afternoon game on the road. The Cowgirls scored three in the first, four in the fifth, and four in the seventh to beat the home team Blazers.
Akaysia Grogan had a nearly silent night in the circle with just four hits allowed. Grogan pitched seven innings with seven strikeouts in the win with just one earned run given up.
Alyssa Lusk and
Grace Thompson had three hits apiece against Belhaven, with
Kinzley Cantu and
Bailey Miller adding two hits each in the afternoon game. Miller led the team with four RBIs with a double to boot and
Kinzley Cantu had two RBIs.
The Cowgirls improved to 5-2 on the season and won their fifth game in a row. HSU will play a rematch with both teams on Saturday in Jackson, Miss. at Belhaven, beginning with Centenary at 10 a.m.
