MARSHALL, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team claimed its third straight American Southwest Conference title with a 91-83 win over East Texas Baptist on Saturday afternoon at Ornelas Gym in Marshall.
HSU will now host the American Southwest Conference Tournament next weekend in Abilene, beginning on Friday evening.
The game was even played in the first half and the Cowboys claimed a 27-20 lead on a
Jamar Ingram jumped in the paint. ETBU narrowed the deficit to 33-31 at halftime.
HSU came out and scored the first seven points of the second half to open a 40-31 lead. However, ETBU battled back with a 15-3 run to tie the game at 50.
After a timeout, the Cowboys scored six straight points. The last four came on back-to-back breakaway dunks by
Tyler Williams and
Chris Bryant.
HSU led just 73-69 with 3:43 to play before a quick 8-0 run put the game away.
Per usual, the Cowboys did it with a balanced attack. Bryant led the way with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Tyler Williams added 17 points,
Myles Amason had 14 points and
Asher Fleming and
Silas Davis had 11 points each.
The Cowboys shot 53.4 percent in the game and hit 27-of-33 free throws.
HSU is now 16-9 overall and 5-1 in ASC play. ETBU is now 7-18 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.
