KERRVILLE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team went the distance in two complete-game wins from the pitching staffs, defeating Schreiner 8-2 and 3-1 on the road Thursday.
The Cowgirls got their ninth and tenth wins of the year behind two solid days in the circle.
Akaysia Grogan went to 4-1 on the year and freshman
Bree Battenfelder out of Midland Senior got her first win in her first start in the complete game.
Grogan pitched game one with six hits in seven innings, four walks, and four strikeouts, only allowing two earned runs in the complete game.
The Cowgirl offense started with an
Addyson Kahklen RBI-single in the second inning.
Grace Thompson and
Bailey Miller added RBIs in the third before Schreiner scored to make it 3-2.
Ella Salinas doubled to score one in the fifth and
Jazlynn Cantu doubled to score another in the sixth. Miller hit a sac fly in the seventh for an RBI and
Jazlynn Cantu doubled for two more RBIs to get the game to 8-2.
Jazlynn Cantu finished with three RBIs to lead the team on two doubles, and Miller had two RBIs.
Grace Thompson had a three-hit game, and
Kinzley Cantu, Salinas, Miller,
Madi Hubbard and
Jazlynn Cantu each had two hits in game one.
Battenfelder threw seven innings of four-hit softball allowing just one run on a ball in the infield in the third inning. She finished with two walks and two strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .174. At one point, she retired eight batters in a row, and she finished with three separate three up, three down innings.
After trailing 1-0, the Cowgirls rallied to win 3-1 with runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.
Salinas doubled for an RBI to tie the game, and
Jazlynn Cantu hit a sac fly RBI to take the lead.
Emily Jacobs singled to score the final Cowgirl run in the win.
Alyssa Lusk reached base three times with a hit and two walks and stole two bases for the Cowgirls with a run scored at Schreiner in game two.
The Cowgirls improved to 10-3 and will play Southwestern University on Friday, March 13 for the first Cowgirl home game at Ellis Field in Abilene next weekend for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
