BELTON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team split a doubleheader st Mary Hardin-Baylor, dropping game one 5-2 and won game two 5-1, ending the series down 3-1 to UMHB in American Southwest Conference play on Friday.
The Cowgirls scored first in game one with a RBI from
Addyson Kahklen before UMHB tied the game 1-1 in the first inning. The Crusaders scored three more runs before
Grace Thompson had a Cowgirl RBI single in the sixth inning to make it 4-2. UMHB went on to win 5-2.
Makenna Holloway started game one and had three runs allowed, two earned, on five hits, a strikeout, and a walk in 2.1 innings pitched in the loss.
Kimma Kincaid threw for 3.2 innings and had two runs allowed on six hits with two walks and a strikeout in relief.
Ella Salinas and
Emily Jacobs had two hits each, Salinas with a double, in game one for Hardin-Simmons.
The Cowgirls won game two behind a masterful game from
Akaysia Grogan pitching a two-hitter against UMHB. She threw for seven innings in the complete game with one run allowed on two hits, two walks, and a strikeout in her first game back.
Kinzley Cantu scored on a wild pitch to take the lead and HSU scored on an error in the fourth and the fifth innings.
Ella Salinas hit a homerun to score two runs to make it 5-0 in the fifth inning. UMHB scored to make it 5-1 before the Cowgirls went on to win.
The Cowgirls are now 15-7 and 1-3 in ASC play and will host Howard Payne for another American Southwest Conference series beginning on April 17 at 4 & 6 p.m. Cowgirl senior day will be on Saturday, April 18 for the games at 12 & 2 p.m. at Ellis Field in Abilene.
