ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team beat McMurry 9-5 on Monday night at Hunter Field to sweep the season series from its crosstown rival.
Not only did HSU sweep the baseball series but it also went 12-0 against the War Hawks on the season across all sports.
The War Hawks picked up an unearned run in the first on an RBI single by Dru Ohmstede. Kia'I Sylvester hit a home run in the second to make it 2-0. HSU scored a run in the second inning on a
Luke Najera sacrifice fly.
Justin Blancaflor had an RBI ground out in the third and
Gavin Bruning gave the Cowboys a 3-2 lead with an RBI single in the third.
HSU added three runs in the fourth on a fielder's choice RBI by
Cannon Negron,
Hunter Trojacek had an RBI single and
Jacob Hollingsworth had a sacrifice fly. Samaripa pushed the lead to 7-2 with an RBI single in the fifth.
Noah Solis had a solo home run for McMurry in the sixth. Blancaflor drove in his 44
th run of the season with an RBI single in the sixth. McMurry scored single runs in the seventh and eighth to cut the deficit to 8-5. HSU scored a run on a dropped fly ball with two outs to add an insurance run in the eighth inning.
HSU used five different pitchers.
Caleb Reynolds started and went a predetermined two innings.
Jace Martinez had his best appearance of the season, going three innings without allowing a run. He earned the win.
Kannon Baird,
Ethan Cloudt and
Garrett Keller all worked out of the bullpen. They combined to strike out 11 batters and allowed just three earned runs and walked only two.
Samaripa had three hits to pace the 13-hit Cowboy attack. Ohmstede had three hits to pace the War Hawks before being ejected in the ninth inning. Cole Prasse the first of six McMurry pitchers took the loss.
HSU improved to 17-13 on the year and McMurry fell to 15-18. HSU returns to action on Thursday at Howard Payne in conference play.
