ABILENE, Texas – Brock Calvillo was named the Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year and the coaching staff was named the co-coaching staff of the year to headline Hardin-Simmons' baseball awards in the American Southwest Conference yearly awards.
Calvillo earned the sportsmanship award. He was one of the Cowboys' top players and missed most of the last four weeks of the season with a foot injury.
The coaching staff of
Mitch Wilson,
Andrew Loudermilk,
Austin Vaught and
Quincy McGraw led the Cowboys on a 13-game improvement from a year ago and the 26 wins were the most at HSU since 2016.
HSU had six players named to the all-conference first team --Freshman catcher
Gavin Bruning, junior first baseman
Hunter Trojacek, junior second baseman
Benji Fielder, junior third baseman
Jacob Hollingsworth, freshman utility player
Hunter Molinar and senior pitcher
Caleb Reynolds.
Seven more Cowboys were named to the second team – sophomore shortstop
Paul Samaripa, sophomore outfielder
Cannon Negron, junior outfielder
Justin Blancaflor, junior designated hitter
Catcher Ridings, sophomore starting pitcher
Jack Kimsey, junior relief pitcher
Jace Martinez and freshman relief pitcher
Garrett Keller.
The Cowboys set new school records for batting average (.346), on-base percentage (.422) and stolen bases (81). HSU improved from 13-26 to 26-16 and advanced to the ASC Championship game.
