Biography

  • Williford returns for his 22nd season as the men’s and women’s tennis coach at Hardin-Simmons.
  • Is currently the longest consecutive tenured Division III coach in the state of Texas with 26 years of college coaching.
  • Led the Cowboys to the 2022 ASC Championship and to the NCAA Tournament. 
  • Has coached 20 ASC MVPs, 15 ASC Freshmen of the Year, ten ASC Newcomers of the Year.
  • Has one ITA All-American. 
  • Has three NCAA All-Americans. 
  • Coached Alex Pavkovich to the NCAA Tournament in 2021. 
  • Has been named the ASC West Coach of the Year nine times for the women and seven for the men.
  • In 2007, a first in Hardin-Simmons school history, the Cowgirls and the Cowboys made the NCAA Tournament.
  • Led both teams to the ASC title in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
  • ASC West Champions for the men in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2021, 2023 and regular season champions in 2025.
  • ASC West Champions for the women in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2022 and 2023. 
  • His women's teams are 153-23 against ASC teams and his men's teams are 162-30. 

Playing_Career

  • A 1993 graduate of Howard Payne, Williford had a distinguished tennis career with the Yellow Jackets.
  • He was named first-team All-Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1989, 1990, and 1992.
  • In 1991, Williford was a qualifier for the NAIA National Tournament.
  • He helped lead his team to the 1991 & 1992 TIAA Championship.

coaching_experience

  • Prior to beginning his college coaching career, he served as Club Pro in West Texas for nine years and was the 1998 and 1999 Permian Basin Pro of the Year.
  • Was the head coach at Howard Payne from 2000 to 2004. 
  • He is USPTA Professional 1, he’s a former USTA Jr. Rec. Committee member, a USTA National Coach, and a USA Tennis National Developmental Coach.
  • In 2000 he was a People to People Sports Ambassador AD for the USA Jr. Teams to Holland and in 2001 to New Zealand/Australia.

Personal

  • He married Shona Williford in 2018.
  • He has four children Tori, Davyn, Alex and Aric all of whom graduated from Hardin-Simmons.
  • He has two granddaughters.  
  • Native of Midland, Texas. 
  • Has a bachelor's from Howard Payne and a master's degree from Hardin-Simmons.
