Fourth-ranked Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team took advantage of a corner kick in the seventh minute of the game and held on for a 1-0 win over arch-rival Trinity, Friday afternoon at the HSU Soccer Complex.
Senior Jessica Flobeck served a perfect corner from the right side to sophomore forward Jordan Morley, who put the shot away for the only score of the game. Neither team had many chances to score.
Trinity had five shots on goal in the game and HSU had three. All-American keeper Christi Carr had a couple of nice saves, including a backhanded save late in the game to preserve the win. Trinity outshot the Cowgirls 19-7, but many of the shots came from long range.
"These are two good teams," said HSU head coach Marcus Wood. "Neither team played their best game and we will both get better as the year progresses, but we will take the win."
The topsy-turvy rivalry has now seen the Cowgirls win the last two meetings. Trinity won two in a row, before the two teams tied to start last season, so they are 2-2-1 in the last five meetings. All have been decided by a goal.
