Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – After a two-week delay to the season for the Hardin-Simmons baseball team because of weather, the Cowboys opened the season with a 6-5 walkoff win over Belhaven before falling 17-2 in the nightcap at Hunter Field.
Game 1
The Cowboys Garrett Frazier had a walkoff single in the top of the seventh inning to give the Cowboys the win.
HSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning. Freshman Zach Hudson had an RBI single in his first career at-bat to give HSU a 1-0 lead and then Kolsen Powers provided drama in his first career trip to the plate with a three-run bomb to left center. Jamie Dominguez later had an RBI single in the inning.
Belhaven chipped away with two runs in the third on a two-run home run by Hunter White. White added an RBI single in the fifth. Belhaven scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game, the last coming on a two-out error.
HSU responded in the seventh with a Dominguez single to start the inning, Weston Hickman then bunted into a fielder's choice and Colin Etheridge walked to set up Frazier who singled up the middle.
Hayden Clark took the ball in the opener for the Cowboys and he worked five solid innings allowing three runs on five hits. Sam Buchkowski worked a scoreless sixth and came out for the seventh and allowed a runner that eventually scored. Grant Mitzelfelt worked the rest of the seventh and earned the win in relief. Beau Louviere took the loss for the Blazers.
Frazier led the Cowboys with three hits and White had two for Belhaven.
Game 2
Belhaven took advantage of 15 Hardin-Simmons walks en route to a 17-2 win in the nightcap. Evan Moore was 4-for-6 with a home run a five RBIs for the Blazers.
Gabe Moore had two of the six HSU hits.
HSU used nine pitchers in the game, starter Wyatt Tumlinson took the loss in his Cowboy debut.
HSU is now 1-1 on the year and Belhaven is 5-3. The teams will conclude the series at noon on Saturday.
