Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against Schreiner University on Wednesday night at John J. Hunter Field.
The Mountaineers opened game one with one in the second, but the Cowboys answered and took the lead with a Jeremy Colon two-run homer to make it 2-1 after two.
Schreiner battled back at took a 3-2 lead in the fourth, and the Cowboys rallied again, this time for four runs. Colon doubled to score two and then Weston Hickman and Zack Corbett each knocked in a run to make it 6-3 Cowboys.
Hickman would triple to score another two Cowboy runs in the sixth, and HSU won game one by a final of 8-3.
Schreiner led the Cowboys with ten hits to nine in game one. Sam Buchkowski started on the mound for the Cowboys and threw all seven innings with a pair of strikeouts and three runs allowed in the win.
The Mountaineer starter was Garret Whitley who had three strikeouts in the loss. Isaiah Hernandez and Christopher Rodriguez came on in relief for Schreiner and each had a strikeout.
In game one, Colon went a perfect 3-3 with a double, home run, and four RBIs. He also came around to score three times himself. Hickman had a pair of knocks with a triple for a total of three Cowboy RBIs.
In game two, the Cowboys got rolling with a three-run moonshot home run by Garret Frazier in the first. Buchkowski drove in another run, and HSU led 4-0 after one.
Schreiner got one on the board in the second, but the Cowboys batted around, adding four more runs in the third inning. Frazier had a solo home run, his second homer of the game.
The Cowboys had some help with a defensive interference to score and then some nifty run-down tactics by Sam Watts allowed him to steal home for another run.
Corbett and Colon both doubled to each drive in one more for the Cowboys, making it an 8-1 lead after six innings. Schreiner got some offense in the final innings, but the Cowboys held on to win 9-4.
The Cowboys had 11 hits and Schreiner had nine in game two. The Cowboys got another great pitching performance by Kadin Croak, a freshman left-hander from Orange, Texas. Croak went the full seven to get the win, allowing only four runs with five strikeouts on the night.
Schreiner started Jace Stephen who had a pair of strikeouts in the loss. Jack Hakala came in and Dakota Price and Raine Uecker finished the game for the Mountaineers.
Frazier led the Cowboys with three hits and four RBIs in game two with two home runs. Colon had two more doubles and an RBI and Jaime Dominguez also had two doubles in game two.
The Cowboys improve to 3-6 and will play at the University of Dallas for two games starting at 12 noon next Tuesday.
