Box Score 2 IRVING, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split a doubleheader with the University of Dallas on Tuesday after in Irving, winning 10-6 in the first game and falling 5-4 in extra innings in the second game.
Game 1 – Hardin-Simmons 10, Dallas 6
The Cowboys took advantage of six walks and an error in the top of the first inning to score six times. Jeremy Colon, Gabe Moore, Sam Buchkowski all walked with the bases loaded. Colin Ethridge had an RBI fielder's choice in the inning, Zach Hudson had a sacrifice fly and another run scored on an error.
With two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the second inning, UD scored six times. Zach Salomon had a two-run home run and Michael Anderson a two-run single in the inning.
HSU came right back with three runs in the third inning. Garrett Frazier had a two-run double and Kolsen Powers walked with the bases loaded. Gabe Moore added an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI single.
UD loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh inning, but Orel Rhodes came on and got the last out for the save. Grant Mitzelfelt started and went one and two-third innings, allowing two earned runs. Raby Hampton (1-1) worked two and two-third innings of one-hit, scoreless relief to earn the win. Andrew Hernandez worked two and one-third innings.
Maximillian Costello took the loss for the Crusaders out of the bullpen. Six different UD players had one hit each.
Frazier had three hits for HSU and Hudson and Moore added two each.
Game 2 – Dallas 5, HSU 4 – (9 innings)
HSU jumped out to a 3-1 lead after five innings in a game that was scheduled for seven innings. Sam Buchkowski, Gabe Moore and Jeremy Colon each had sacrifice flies in the second, third and fifth innings respectively.
The Crusaders scored a run in the sixth on a wild pitch and tied the game in the seventh on an RBI double by Joseph Vondraschek.
HSU scored a run in the ninth inning to take a 4-3 lead on an RBI single by Joey Quartararo, UD came back and scored a run in the ninth to tie the game on a bases-loaded walk and Michael Anderson drove home the winning run as the Cowboys tried to turn a double play but Anderson beat the relay and Ross Lowe scored from third base.
John Clift started and worked three innings, allowing just one run. Kadin Croak also tossed three innings of one-run ball for the Cowboys. Hayden Clark, Orel Rhodes, Tyler Madrid and Brandon Girod also worked out of the bullpen with Girod taking the loss.
Colon had two of the eight hits for the Cowboys in the contest.
HSU is now 4-7 on the year and returns to conference play on Friday when it hosts East Texas Baptist at 7 p.m. at Hunter Field. UD is now 2-8 on the year.
