Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped an American Southwest Conference doubleheader to East Texas Baptist on Saturday at Hunter Field, falling 22-2 and 12-4.
Game 1
The first game of the doubleheader got lopsided in the early going with ETBU scoring 18 runs in the first three innings. Kolsen Powers had a solo home run for HSU in the fifth and Zack Corbett a sacrifice fly in the seventh for the only runs.
Grant Mitzelfelt took the loss allowing 10 runs in two innings of work. Tyler Madrid and Lake Schara worked out of the bullpen. Isaiah Alvarenga earned the win with four innings of shutout two-hit ball to improve to 4-0 for the Tigers.
Powers and Zach Hudson had two hits each for HSU.
Game 2
In the second game ETBU scored four times in the third inning, Jake Miller was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Carson Wilson had a two-run single and another run scored on the back end of a double play.
HSU scored two in the bottom of the third on RBI doubles by Weston Hickman and Jamie Dominguez. ETBU scored on an error and a fielder's choice in the fourth to make it 6-2. HSU added a single run in the seventh on a Colin Ethridge sacrifice fly.
The Tigers busted the game open in the eighth with six runs. HSU added an RBI double by Garrett Frazier in the ninth.
John Clift gave the Cowboys a solid start and worked into the eighth inning. He allowed nine runs, but only four were earned. Kadin Croak, Brandon Girod and Orel Rhodes worked out of the bullpen for HSU. Hudson and Dominguez had two hits each for HSU.
Cole Godkin won the game in relief for ETBU. Four different Tigers had four hits each.
The Cowboys are now 4-10 on the year and 1-8 in league play. ETBU improved to 12-5 overall and to 7-2 in conference play.
HSU will play Southwestern in a single game at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
