ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team fell 6-5 to Southwestern on Tuesday night at Hunter Field.
The Cowboys scored first when Hunter Garrison and Jamie Dominguez each had bases-loaded walks in the first inning. Jacob Tanner had an RBI double and Presto Witt had an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2 in the third inning.
HSU regained the lead in the fourth inning when Weston Hickman had a two-out bloop double and Garrison singled to left to bring him home.
Luke Kruse had a bases-loaded hit by pitch for the Pirates in the sixth inning and Jacob Tanner had an infield RBI single and Preston Witt walked with the bases loaded to give Southwestern a 5-3 lead.
HSU scored twice in the sixth to tie the game at 5. Weston Hickman walked with the bases loaded and Jamie Dominguez had an RBI fielder's choice. Southwestern scored the eventual winning run on a Ted Lobkowicz RBI single in the seventh.
Zach Hudson had three hits for the Cowboys. Riley Rice received the start and worked four solid innings. Brandon Girod allowed three unearned runs and Andrew Hernandez took the loss out of the bullpen. Grant Mitzelfelt worked two and one-third innings of scoreless relief for the Cowboys.
Southwestern used five pitchers. Skyler White worked three shutout innings to earn the win and Trey Schwartz came on with one on and no outs in the ninth and worked the final three outs for the save. Tanner and Lobkowicz had two hits each for SU.
The Cowboys head to LeTourneau for an American Southwest Conference series on the weekend. HSU is now 4-11 and Southwestern improved to 5-9.
