Cowboys Fall in Doubleheader to Mary Hardin-Baylor

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against the UMHB Cru on Saturday at John J. Hunter Field in American Southwest Conference play.

The Cowboy baseball team celebrated Michael Simpson Day at the ballpark to honor the team's alum who was recently inducted into the HSU Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Cowboys fell in game one by a score of 6-1. The HSU run came in the seventh and final inning off a Colin Ethridge single to left.

Wyatt Tumlinson started for the Cowboys and recorded nine strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings in the loss. Acierni pitched a gem for the Cru with seven strikeouts and one run allowed on four hits in the complete game.

Zach Husdon had two hits to lead the Cowboys in game one while Dawson Shibley led UMHB with two hits and an RBI.  

The bats came alive for both teams in game two with a final score of 13-7 in favor of the Cru. The Cowboys trailed early but took the lead after scoring on an error and Weston Hickman driving in a run on a sac fly for a 2-1 lead after two.

The Cru cranked out seven more runs through the fifth inning and the Cowboys answered with four in the fifth. Jaime Dominguez singled to score one and Hudson tripled off the wall in center to score the second.

The Cowboys cashed in another Cru error and Jeremy Colon doubled in one more to make it 8-6 UMHB after five. A pair of two run homers put the Cru up 12-6, but Hickman doubled home another run to get the Cowboys down 12-7 in the sixth.

UMHB would add another run to ice the game at 13-7, taking all three games of the weekend series.

Hickman led the Cowboys with two RBIs in game two. Bolin and Jones each had three RBIs for the Cru.

Brandon Girod had the Cowboy start and was tagged in the loss. Girod only allowed four earned runs and had a pair of Ks in the outing. Ripke started for UMHB and Pace earned the win while Palczewski came in at an 8-7 score to get the save.

The Cowboys fall to 9-24 and 5-16 in the conference while the Cru moves up to 20-14 and 12-9 in ASC play. The Cowboys will go to Texas-Dallas Tuesday for a game starting at 2 p.m.
