Frazier's Three Home Runs Fuels Cowboys' Win At Sul Ross State

Box Score

ALPINE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team used three Garrett Frazier home runs and a strong pitching effort from the bullpen to rally from a 9-1 deficit to take a 13-11 win over Sul Ross State in an American Southwest Conference series opener at Kokernot Field in Alpine on Friday night.

Frazier hit his first home run in the top of the first inning to give HSU a 1-0 lead. The Lobos then responded with two runs in the first inning on a Carsen Thor two-run double. Jalen Benton hit a two-run home run in the second inning, Jorge Marque had an RBI triple, Thor had an RBI single and Richard Bailey a three-run home run to give the Lobos a 9-1 lead after two innings.

HSU came right back with six runs in the third inning. Frazier and Gabe Moore each had three-run home runs.

Matthew Wheeler had a two-run single for the Lobos in the fourth inning, but that was the last runs the Lobos would score as the Cowboy bullpen closed the door.

Freshman Zach Hudson had his first career home run in the fifth and fellow freshman Colin Etheridge added a two-run shot to narrow the deficit to 11-10.

Hudson tied the game in the sixth with an RBI single. He also saved a run in the bottom of the inning with a leaping snare of a ball ticketed for center field with a runner at third and two out.

The Lobos tried the fall-down play where the runner left early from first and they tried to sneak in the runner from third in the bottom of the eighth. HSU cut down the runner at the plate to keep the game tied.

Frazier then hit his third home run a massive shot to left field to make it 12-11 and the Cowboys added an insurance run when they tried a double steal with two outs and the throw to third went into left field to bring home Ethridge. HSU ended the game with a double play on a line drive to Hudson who stepped on the bag at second base.

Hayden Clark started and he allowed eight runs (four earned) over an inning and two-thirds. Freshman Wyatt Tumlinson came on and worked five and one-third innings and allowed three runs (two earned). Raby Hampton worked to a pair of batters in the eighth inning and freshman closer Grant Mitzelfelt (2-2) came on and worked one and two-third innings of scoreless relief to earn the win.

Isaiah Moya started the game and allowed 10 earned runs over five innings of work. Ian Craigie took the loss allowing three runs over four innings of relief.

Frazier had three hits and drove in five runs for the Cowboys. Jeremy Colon also had three hits and Thor led Sul Ross with four hits. The three-home run game tied the HSU and ASC record for home runs in a game. The last Cowboy to hit three home runs in a game was Colton Parker.

HSU is now 7-14 overall and 3-10 in conference play. Sul Ross State fell to 7-15 overall and 3-12 in league play. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
