Box Score KERRVILLE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team scored 12 unanswered runs, including six runs in the ninth inning, to rally for a 12-8 win over Schreiner on Tuesday afternoon in Kerrville.
The Mountaineers jumped out to an 8-1 lead after five innings before the Cowboys started to chip away.
Gannon Azios had a solo home run in the sixth. Brayden Martin had an RBI single and another run scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 8-4.
In the eighth inning, Nick Ellington had a two-run single to cut the deficit to 8-6. HSU left seven runners on base in the sixth through eighth innings.
Gabe Moore led off the ninth inning with a pinch-hit single and Keaton Hartman followed with a two-run home run to left field to tie the game. Martin had a base hit and Luke Kirkbride put down a perfect sacrifice bunt and the throw to first got away and Martin was able to come all the way around to score. Ellington followed with an RBI single and Garrett Frazier hit a two-run home run to left field to make it 12-8.
Corey Ballew started on the mound for HSU and allowed three runs on seven hits in one and two-third innings. Kolten Kitchens, Caleb Smith, Orel Rhodes and Jaydon Stephens worked out of the bullpen.
Stephens came on and picked a runner off at second base to end a threat in the seventh, then struck out the side in the eighth and worked a scoreless ninth for the win in relief.
Azios had three this for the Cowboys and Hartman, Ellington and Martin each added two hits. Tyler Juarez and Will Vogt each had three hits and a home run for Schreiner.
HSU is now 11-9 on the year and has won five straight games. Schreiner fell to 9-9 with the loss. The Cowboys continue their road trip this weekend in Clarksville, Ark. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
