Box Score 2 MARSHALL, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped a doubleheader at East Texas Baptist, 10-1 and 6-5, in American Southwest Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Marshall.
Game 1
The Tigers scored five runs in the first inning and did not look back in a 10-1 win. Carson Wilson and Nicolas Chavez each had two-run doubles in the inning.
Gannon Azios drove in the Cowboys' only run in the fifth on an RBI single. Brett Wagner had a two-run triple in the sixth inning for ETBU and Christopher Robinson and Ben Lee each had solo home runs to set up the final score.
Grant Mitzelfelt (2-2) took the loss allowing six runs in five innings, while striking out six. Jordan Ambriz and Orel Rhodes worked out of the bullpen. Sayer Collins improved to 5-0 scattering five hits and one run over the seven innings. He struck out 11 batters.
Garrett Frazier had two hits for the Cowboys. Will Kelly led the Tigers with three hits.
Game 2
HSU jumped to a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Freshman Carson Braun, making his first career start, led the inning off with a single to right center. Luke Kirkbride brought him home with a two-run home run to left center.
ETBU took the lead with four runs in the third. Kelley had an RBI groundout and Wagner hit a three-run home run to left. Wagner added an RBI single in the fifth inning to make it 5-2.
Sam Buchkowski hit his first career home run in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 5-3 and then Jett Forrest tied the game in the eighth inning on a two-run home run to left center. It was his sixth home run of the season.
ETBU scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Robinson led off with a double and scored on a bunt play where the throw was up the line.
Buchkowski led the Cowboys with seven hits. Wagner had three of the eight ETBU hits and drove in four.
Brandon Girod started and worked four and two-third innings and allowed four earned runs. Alex Carte took the loss, allowing an unearned run in two and one-third innings. Caidon Livingston worked a scoreless inning of relief.
Jacob Sherman went seven and two-third innings and allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out 13. Trent Clark earned the win out of the bullpen with one and one-third innings of scoreless relief.
HSU is now 5-7 overall and in conference play this season and ETBU improved to 14-3 overall and 11-1 in ASC play. The Cowboys will return home for a Wednesday non-conference game with Schreiner at 3 p.m.
