Box Score 2 AUSTIN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split its American Southwest Conference doubleheader at Concordia on Saturday afternoon, losing 9-5 in the first game and coming back for an 8-5 win in the nightcap.
Game 1
Both teams scored a pair of runs in the first inning, but Concordia broke open the game with seven runs in the second inning to take a 9-2 lead. Garrett Frazier had an RBI double and Corey Ballew an RBI single in the first.
Frazier homered in the third inning and Weston Hickman had an RBI single in the sixth and Luke Kirkbride scored on a wild pitch.
Kirkbride, Frazier and Ballew had two hits each for HSU. Eight different Tornados had one hit each.
Grant Mitzelfelt (3-6) took the loss allowing four earned runs over one and two-third innings. Kolten Kitchens worked one-third of an inning and Caleb Smith worked four perfect innings with five strikeouts.
Game 2
HSU scored first in the second game with an RBI groundout by Sam Buchkowski in the second. Concordia answered with two runs in the second and HSU tied the game in the third on a wild pitch.
Brayden Martin had an RBO double in the fourth and Luke Kirkbride added a sacrifice fly to give HSU a 4-2 lead. Jett Forrest hit his 11th home run of the season a two-run shot in the fifth inning and Nick Ellington made it 7-2 with an RBI double.
Concordia tallied three scores in the fifth to cut its deficit to 7-5. E.J. Sanchez had a two-run single. Forrest gave the Cowboys an insurance run in the eighth inning with an RBI single in the eighth.
Brandon Girod started and went three and two-third innings. Jaydon Stephens worked two innings of relief. Kadi Croak worked one and two-third innings to earn the win and Kolten Kitchens worked the final one and two-third innings for the save. Concordia used eight different pitchers in the game.
Forrest led the Cowboys with four hits and Shawn Huber had two hits to pace Concordia.
HSU is now 19-17 on the year and 12-15 in ASC play. Concordia is 14-20 overall and 13-14 in league play. HSU will host Arlington Baptist on Friday evening at 5 p.m.
