Box Score 2 RICHARDSON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split games on Saturday in the American Southwest Conference Red Bracket Tournament in Richardson, winning 9-5 over Concordia and losing a heartbreaker 4-3 in 13 innings to UT Dallas to end the season.
HSU 9, Concordia 5
The Cowboys extended their season with a 9-5 win over Concordia on Saturday morning.
HSU wasted no time scoring three runs in the first. Garrett Frazier had an RBI double, Gannon Azios an RBI triple and Corey Ballew an RBI single. The Tornados scored a run in the second on a Chris Varljen RBI single.
The Cowboys extended the lead to 4-1 in the second on a passed ball. Brayden Martin gave the Cowboys a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning with an RBI single. Varljen had a two-run single in the sixth to cut the HSU lead to 5-3.
Azios had a bases loaded walk and Ballew a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to push the lead to 7-3. Christian Padilla had an RBI triple and Kalen Moreno an RBI single in the eight for the Tornados to cut the HSU lead to 7-5. Ballew scored on a wild pitch and Sam Buchkowski added an RBI double to center field in the eighth.
Grant Mitzelfelt earned the win for the Cowboys allowing two earned runs over five and one-third innings to improve to 4-6. Hayden Clark worked one and two-third innings and Wyatt Tumlinson pitched two scoreless innings for his second save of the season.
Buchkowski had three hits for the Cowboys to pace the 15-hit attack. Five different Tornados had two hits.
UTD 4, HSU 3
The Cowboys battled and scored a run in the ninth inning to send the game to extra innings but the Comets came up with a walkoff hit in the bottom of the 13th inning.
HSU had leadoff doubles in the 11th and 12th innings but the Comets were able to keep HSU off the board. Ramon Garza won the game in the 13th walkoff double.
UTD scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings. In the first Andrew Skivington had an RBI single. In the other two innings the Comets had the bases loaded both times and hit into double plays but the runner from third scored both times.
Corey Ballew had a two-run double in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 3-2 and Sam Buchkowski tied the game with a two-out base hit to left to score Garrett Frazier.
Frazier, Forrest and Ballew each had two hits for the Cowboys. Caidon Livingston worked three innings, then Kadin Croak came in and went four and two-third scoreless innings. Caleb Smith then was superb for the Cowboys as he also worked four and two-third innings and gave up just the final run to take the hard-luck loss.
Five different Comets had two hits each and Trevor McGrath started and went six and one-third innings. Kenny Garza, the sixth Comet pitcher earned the win with two innings of scoreless relief.
HSU finished the season with a record of 22-21. It is the first winning season since 2016 for the Cowboys. UTD will need to win two games against Belhaven tomorrow to advance.
Five Cowboys played their last game on Saturday. Seniors Hickman, Frazier and Clark and two juniors Gabe Moore and Orel Rhodes are graduating early.
