ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowboy soccer team blanked the Sul Ross State Lobos 4-0 in a non-conference game on Thursday night at the HSU Soccer Complex.
A tight match in the opening half was put in favor of the Cowboys a minute before half with a free kick from
Gage Riley that was headed in the back corner for goal by
Maxwell Winneker for his team-leading fourth goal of the year.
The Cowboys increased the 1-0 halftime lead with a big throw from
J.J. Sissen off the head of Winneker for a header for goal from
Jakob Fiol to make it 2-0 in the 61
st minute.
Abilene's own freshman
Andres Munoz finessed the keeper for his first career Cowboy goal with an assist from
Omar Estrada to push it to 3-0 in the 73
rd minute. Estrada would earn a penalty kick for HSU and find the back of the net for the fourth Cowboy goal in the 74
th minute to seal the deal at 4-0.
HSU shot 20 times with 11 shots on goal to six and three on goal for Sul Ross. Hardin-Simmons had 14 corners and allowed none for the opponent in the shutout.
Carson Null started in goal and went full time with three saves in the match for the Cowboys.
The Cowboys have 12 goals and four wins and a tie in the last five games to pull to a record of 4-4-4 and 2-0-1 heading into an ASC match with Howard Payne on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
