ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl soccer team won 4-0 over Howard Payne in an American Southwest Conference match thanks to two-goal games from
Gabby Aviles and
Lexi Templin.
After two goals each on Saturday night, Templin and Aviles are the top Cowgirl goal scorers, Templin leading with 13 and Aviles scoring nine on the season.
Aviles opened the scoring with a finish off a Cowgirl free kick in by
Mercy Mummert and a touch from
Julie Atlason to take the lead in the seventh minute.
Hardin-Simmons had a tight match on its hands until blowing the doors off with three goals in the final third of the game.
Templin found a feed from Aviles in tight on the keeper to toe in the second Cowgirl goal in the 64
th minute.
Lauren Stengel got a ball from the middle through to Aviles for her second score in the game and a 3-0 lead in the 67
th minute.
Templin added the final Cowgirl goal and her second of the night from a
Kaylee Maddox assist in the 76
th minute to end the ASC win 4-0 over Howard Payne.
The Cowgirls held total control of the contest with 32 shots to three for the Yellow Jackets, adding a 19 to zero mark for shots on goal for the opposition. HSU also took nine corners and allowed none on defense.
The quiet night on defense benefited
Haley Foley starting in goal and playing the first half before a combined shutout with
Abigail Medlin starting the second half and giving way to
Jenna Russell for 14 minutes in at keeper.
Hardin-Simmons moves up to 11-0-2 and 4-0-1 in the ASC with a match for sole possession of the conference top seed next Thursday in Abilene against the Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru at 5 p.m.
