ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl soccer team came up short for the first loss of the season to the Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru 1-0 on Thursday night in American Southwest Conference play at the HSU Soccer Complex.
The Cowgirls and Cru came into the night atop the ASC, each with a record of 4-0-1 in a game for all the marbles.
Chances for goals were harder to come by as per usual in the match between the top seeds. The Cru came out the gates with 14 shots to four in the first half and were matched by the Cowgirls who had 14 shots to five in the second half.
The difference in the match came from Natalie Mason finding herself with enough room to shoot from the top of the box for a goal in the corner net for the game-winner for UMHB in the 52
nd minute.
The Cowgirls led with nine corner kicks and had the offensive edge throughout the second, ending with a corner kick in the final seconds that created a shot saved by the Cru off the top to seal the 1-0 Cowgirl loss as time expired.
Haley Foley started in goal for the Cowgirls with five saves in the contest.
The Cowgirls fall to 11-1-2 and 4-1-1 in ASC play while UMHB moves to 13-0-1 and 5-0-1 on the season. Join Hardin-Simmons on Saturday with the Cowgirl Soccer Senior Day beginning at 4:45 p.m. before the match against Concordia (Tex.).
