ALPINE, Texas– Hardin-Simmons' football team scored on the first possession of the game and never let up in a 55-7 win over Sil Ross State on Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field in Alpine.
Noah Garcia put the Cowboys on the board on the first drive with a 54-yard touchdown run.
Colton Marshall scored for the Cowboys on the first play of the second quarter to make the score 13-0 after a missed PAT.
Sul Ross State drove down inside the Cowboys' 5-yard line but
Mekhai Coleman recovered a fumble to stop the Lobos best chance to score in the first half. HSU responded with a 98-yard drive for a touchdown. Garcia capped the drive with a 15-yard run.
Andy Prazak hit the extra point and the Cowboys led 21-0.
HSU scored three more times before halftime.
Gaylon Glynn hit K.J. Peoples on a 58-yard touchdown pass,
Tailon Garrett scored on a 40-yard pass from Glynn and
Myles Featherston scored from 1-yard out with :31 to play in the half and Prazak's PAT made it 41-0 at the break. HSU outgained the Lobos 416-88 in the half.
Dameon Gomes added to the lead with 5:17 to play in the third quarter when he returned a punt 68 yards for a touchdown.
Kevin Martin scored on a 9-yard touchdown run for his first career touchdown. Sul Ross State broke up the shutout with a 5-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.
HSU received a big lift with All-American linebacker
Matt Mitchell back on the field.
Cade Michna also was able to play a few snaps. Mitchell led the defense with five tackles despite not playing a ton in the second half.
Marshall led the running game with 90 yards, Glynn threw for 224 yards and Peoples had three catches for 81 yards. HSU outgained the Lobos 506-253.
The Cowboys are now 6-1 on the year and will play Mary Hardin-Baylor with first place in the ASC on the line next week at Shelton Stadium.
