ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowboy soccer team defeated the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets 2-1 in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament quarterfinal on Halloween at the HSU Soccer Complex.
The Cowboys entered the No. 3 overall seed hosting the No. 6 seed Howard Payne. The winner would move on to play No. 3 seed Concordia Texas on Thursday night, hosted at UMHB.
The night started off scary for the Cowboys with a Yellow Jacket goal in the 32
nd to open the game 1-0.
The Cowboys tied the game quickly, with
Liam Cisneros scoring his second goal of the year after subbing in and running directly to the box to score within seconds off an assist from
J.J. Sissen.
The Cowboys had a would-be goal scorer tackled by the keeper moments before half, and were awarded a penalty kick that was scored off the foot of
Gage Riley for his first goal as a Cowboy and the game-winner.
Hardin-Simmons advances in the ASC Tournament with the 2-1 win. HSU shot 26 times with eight shots on goal to 11 shots and four shots on goal for Howard Payne.
The Cowboys led with nine corner kicks to two for the Yellow Jackets.
Carson Null started at goalkeeper and had three saves in the win.
The Cowboys move on with a record of 8-5-5 to the ASC Championship Tournament semifinal against Concordia on Thursday at 8 p.m. in Belton.
