RICHARDSON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team beat defending league champion UT Dallas 5-3 in the American Southwest Conference opener on Friday at UTD Field in Richardson.
Colby Seltzer started a big day with an RBI double in the first inning for the Cowboys. The Cowboys added to the lead in the third inning with a sacrifice fly by Gannon Azios and a Nick Ellington RBI single.
Sam Buchkowski made it 4-0 in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly. Andrew Skivington had an RBI single and Kade Turnage had a two-run triple to narrow the deficit to 4-3 in the seventh inning. Smith got out of the inning and went the rest of the way.
Seltzer gave the Cowboys an insurance run in the ninth inning with a solo home run. He finished the day 4-for-5 to lead the Cowboy offense. Keagan Vance had three hits to pace UTD.
Ryan Vera took the loss on the mound allowing 11 hits and three runs in five and one-third innings.
Caidon Livingston had another strong outing on the mound for the Cowboys. He went six and two-third innings and allowed just three runs on eight hits and struck out four to move to 2-1 on the year. Caleb Smith allowed just one hit over two and -third innings of relief to pick up the save.
HSU is now 2-5 on the year and 1-0 in league play. The Comets are 3-2 overall and 0-1 in ASC action. The two teams will play a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
