Box Score 2 RICHARDSON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split a doubleheader at UT Dallas and won the first American Southwest Conference series of the year on Saturday at the UTD Baseball Field.
The Cowboys won the first game 4-3 and fell 4-2 on a walkoff home run in the nightcap.
In the first game, Austin Nairin and Keagan Vance had RBI singles in the second inning to give UTD a 2-0 lead. The Cowboys came right back with a two-run single by Colby Seltzer in the second inning and Cole Antonelli scored on a wild pitch to give the Cowboys a 3-2 lead in the third inning.
Nairin had an RBI double in the fourth to tie the game.
In the seventh inning, of the seventh-inning game Karson Leatherwood doubled to lead off the inning moved to third on a Bryson Holt bunt single. He scored on a Nick Ellington sacrifice fly to give the Cowboys the lead.
Grant Mitzelfelt (1-2) earned the win for the Cowboys as he went the distance allowing just two earned runs and scattering eight hits. Ellington and Antonelli each had two hits for the Cowboys.
Kasey Klyng took the loss in relief of Dylan Hughley. Hughley went six innings and allowed three runs on seventh hits. Narin and Luke Finn had two hits each for the Comets.
In the nightcap, HSU jumped on the board with a two-run home run by Seltzer in the first inning and the game stayed 2-0 until the seventh inning.
Dylan Bivins had an RBI single to left to cut the HSU lead to 2-1 and Andrew Skivington tied the game with an RBI single. Bivins then came up and hit a two-run walkoff home run.
Brandon Bane started and worked six scoreless innings allowing just three hits and struck out four. Johnny Follett, Caleb Smith and Wyatt Tumlinson all worked in relief. Smith allowed two runs to take the loss. Luke Kirkbride had two of the six HSU hits.
Bivins led the Comets with four hits and he drove in three runs. Joshua Wood started for the Comets and left after one and one-third innings with the bases loaded. Caleb Vuono came on and got out of the jam and worked seven and two-third innings of scoreless two-hit relief to earn the win.
HSU is now 3-6 on the year and 2-1 in league play. The Comets are 4-3 overall and 1-2 in league play. The Cowboys will play their first home games of the year at home on Friday against Ozarks when it hosts a doubleheader.
