ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team used the long ball on offense and a strong pitching performance from Caidon Livingston in a 12-3 win over St. Thomas on Friday night at Hunter Field.
UST starter Chris Parsons came into the game 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA and had allowed just six hits on the season. It didn't take the Cowboys long to change that as he walked the first three batters and then Gannon Azios had a sacrifice fly. Jett Forrest made it 4-0 with a laser shot home run to left for his first home run of the season.
The Celts scored a run in the second and the Cowboys added three runs. Colby Seltzer had an RBI single and Karson Leatherwood had a two-run double to make it 7-1 as the Cowboys chased Parsons after the second inning.
Azios had a long home run in the fourth inning- and Dylan Lamb had an RBI single for UST in the fifth. Colby McClure added a solo home run in the sixth.
HSU added to the lead in the sixth when Seltzer had a three-run home run to right, his fourth of the season and Sam Buchkowski added an RBI single through the right side.
Parsons was followed by six relievers for UST. McClure and Leo Galvan had two hits each for the Celts.
Livingston improved to 4-1 on the year with seven innings of three-run ball. He set a new career-high with seven strikeouts. Caleb Smith worked the final two innings for HSU.
Seltzer had two hits and drove in four, and Leatherwood had a pair of hits.
HSU is now 6-8 on the year and UST is 9-3. The teams will close the non-conference series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
