Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team won its third-straight series as it beat St. Thomas 2-1 in the first game before falling 7-3 in the nightcap on Saturday at Hunter Field.
HSU for the third straight week won the first two games of the series but fell in the third game.
The first game was a pitcher's duel throughout. St. Thomas scored its only run of the game with two outs in the first inning on a pop up to shallow left. It was misplayed for an error allowing Cameron McClure to score from first.
HSU tied the game in the second inning on a Nick Ellington RBI single. In the sixth inning, with runners at second and third Karson Leatherwood came home to score on a wild pitch.
After that, Grant Mitzelfelt held the Celts off as he scattered seven hits, allowed the one unearned run and struck out four to move to 3-1 on the year. It was his second straight complete game.
Jett Forrest had three of the Cowboys' six hits against starter Landon Murray, who allowed two runs and struck out four to fall to 2-2 on the year.
The second game was tied at 2-2 after five innings but Dylan Lamb's three-run home run in the sixth inning broke the tie and the Celts went on to win 7-3.
Gannon Azios had a two-run double for HSU in the third and added an RBI single in the seventh. He, Luke Kirkbride and Colby Seltzer had three hits each for the Cowboys.
Brandon Bane allowed five runs over six innings and fell to 0-4. Alex Carte tossed a scoreless inning and Wyatt Tumlinson allowed two runs in two innings.
Cameron McClure led the Celts with four hits and Kadin Munson earned the win with five innings of two-run pitching. Like Sebesta worked three innings allowing just a run and Kameron Craig worked the ninth.
The Cowboys are now 7-9 on the year and St. Thomas is 10-4. HSU will travel to Irving to play the University of Dallas on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in a single game.
