Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split a doubleheader with Sul Ross State on Saturday, losing 2-1 in the first game in eight innings, before winning the nightcap 5-3 to take its American Southwest Conference series at Hunter Field.
In the first game, Sul Ross State scored a run in the top of the first inning and the game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh inning.
HSU tied the game in the seventh with a sacrifice fly from Luke Kirkbride. The Lobos scored the winning run in the eighth inning on a wild pitch.
Both starting pitchers were outstanding as Gage Cobb went six scoreless innings for the Lobos. Connor Archer worked the final two innings to pick up the win to improve to 2-1.
Grant Mitzelfelt tossed his fourth straight complete game. He went eight innings and allowed two runs (one earned) while scattering six hits. He is now 3-2 on the year.
Kirkbride had two of the six Cowboy hits. Tye Lindsey had two of the six Lobo hits.
In the second game, Sam Buchkowski put the Cowboys on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the second inning. The Lobos tied the game with a sacrifice fly from Aaron Morales in the top of the fourth.
Colby Seltzer led off the bottom of the fourth inning with his fifth home run of the season. HSU added three runs in the bottom of the fifth when Seltzer had an RBI single and Gannon Azios and Karson Leatherwood had back-to-back sacrifice flies.
Seltzer had two hits and drove in two. Matthew Wheeler had two hits for the Lobos.
Brandon Bane improved to 1-4 on the year with a complete-game win on the mound. He allowed just one earned run and scattered six hits. Dawson Beard took the loss allowing two runs in three and two-third innings to fall to 1-3.
HSU is now 9-11 on the year and 6-3 in conference play. SRSU is now 8-8 overall and 4-5 in league play. The Cowboys will head to Kerrville on Tuesday to play Schreiner.
