Box Score KERRVILLE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team rallied for a 6-4 win in non-conference action at Schreiner on Tuesday afternoon.
Devin Hooper had an RBI single and another run scored on a throwing error as Schreiner took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
Karson Leatherwood cut the deficit in half with an RBI single in the fourth and in the sixth inning HSU added four more runs. Jett Forrest had a bases loaded walk for an RBI, Sam Buchkowski had two-RBI fielder's choice and Jeremy Colon added an RBI single.
Gannon Azios added an RBI single in the seventh inning. The Mountaineers scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning on a two-run single by Daniel Garza.
Brandon Girod made his second start coming off an injury. He allowed two runs in two and one-third innings of work. He was relieved by Kolten Kitchens who came on and had the best outing of his HSU career. Kitchens was playing close to home as he is from Center Point just outside of Kerrville.
He allowed only one hit over his first four and two-third innings before allowing two runs in the eighth. He is now 1-1 on the year. Caleb Smith came on and worked a scoreless ninth.
Jacob Munoz the second of five Schreiner pitchers took the loss.
Azios and Leatherwood had two hits each for the Cowboys. Garza had two of the six Schreiner hits.
The Cowboys are now 10-11 and will host Concordia in a big American Southwest Conference series this weekend starting Friday at 7 p.m. at Hunter Field. Schreiner fell to 12-8 with the loss.
