Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team swept an American Conference doubleheader winning 2-1 in eight innings in the first game and taking the nightcap 12-5 on Saturday at Hunter Field.
The Cowboys' Grant Mitzelfelt and the Eagles' Isaac Felts locked up in a pitching duel in what was supposed to be a seven-inning game.
Ozarks' Dru Didway hit a solo home run in the second inning for the only run of the game that Mitzelfelt. He allowed just seven hits and one run while striking out five batters to improve to 2-1 on the year.
The Cowboys scored on an error to tie the game in the fifth inning. The game remained 1-1 until the bottom of the eighth inning when freshman Karson Leatherwood singled home Colby Seltzer for the walkoff win in the eighth inning.
Felts went seven and one-third innings and allowed just one earned run and struck out seven and took the hard-luck loss.
Nick Ellington and Gannon Azios had two hits each for the Cowboys. Cole Clark had three hits for Ozarks.
The second game was shortened to seven innings by league rules as the first game went to extra innings. It started as a slugfest as Ozarks scored two runs in the first and the Cowboys came right back with three runs. Seltzer had a two-run triple and Azios had a sacrifice fly.
Ozarks scored three runs in the second to take a 5-3 lead and the Cowboys came back with three runs in the third inning. Sam Buchkowski had an RBI single, Tristan Laughlin had a fielder's choice RBI and Ellington had an RBI double. Buchkowksi made it 7-5 with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning,
Leatherwood had an RBI single in the fifth inning and Ellington had an RBI single and Kirkbride had an RBI groundout to add to the lead. Cole Antonelli had a two-run single in that four-run sixth inning.
Ellington and Leatherwood each had three hits for the Cowboys in the game. Rennie Aronja had two hits for Ozarks.
Caidon Livingston improved to 3-0 as he went the distance allowing just three earned runs on eight hits. Jake Estrada took the loss for Ozarks.
HSU is now 5-6 on the year and 4-1 in ASC play. Ozarks fell to 2-11 overall and 1-4 in league play. The teams will play a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
