ABILENE, Texas – Schreiner's first six batters of the game reached base and all scored in a six-run first inning and the Hardin-Simmons baseball team fell 8-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Hunter Field.
After the big first inning that featured six hits, two walks and a hit batter the game moved quickly as both bullpens were solid.
Joseph DiCarlo had a solo home run for the Mountaineers in the second and the game remained 7-0 until a Will Vogt RBI double in the seventh made it 8-0.
Nick Ellington put the Cowboys on the board with an RBI single in the seventh and Sam Buchkowski had an RBI groundout.
Luke Kirkbride and Colby Seltzer each had three hits for the Cowboys. Chance Goins had three hits to pace the Mountaineers.
Kolten Kitchens started for the Cowboys and took the loss. Jacob Posey allowed two runs in two innings of work. Caleb Smith worked three scoreless innings, Jaydon Stephens worked two innings allowing just a run and Alex Carte worked two scoreless innings.
Schreiner used a staff pitching day and Brendon Cardenas earned the win with three scoreless innings to move to 3-0. Jared Hyman worked two scoreless innings. Christopher Rodriguez worked two innings and Konway Baird and Mark Henderson one each.
The Cowboys are now 5-8 on the year and the Mountaineers improved to 9-4. HSU will host St. Thomas in a three-game set this weekend at Hunter Field.
