BROWNWOOD, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split a doubleheader winning 12-4 and falling 3-1 at Howard Payne in American Southwest Conference action at Don Shepard Park on Saturday.
The Cowboys won the series two games to one. HSU had another good offensive game in the first game of the doubleheader.
HSU scored a run on an error and Karson Leatherwood had an RBI single in the first inning. HPU answered with a single run in the bottom of the first on a Kayden Kelley RBI single.
The Cowboys pushed the lead to 5-1 in the second inning by scoring a run on an error and Colby Seltzer had a two-run RBI single. UMHB scored a run in the second.
HSU scored three more runs in the fourth inning on a Luke Kirkbride RBI double and RBI singles by Cole Antonelli and Leatherwood. Leatherwood added a two-run double in the sixth inning, Kyler Reed had an RBI single and Nick Ellington had an RBI double. Seth Bowman had a two-run single for HPU in the sixth inning.
Leatherwood and Reed, both freshmen, had three hits each and Leatherwood drove in four runs. Grant Mitzelfelt improved to 4-3 on the year as he went five and one-third innings and allowed four runs. Caleb Smith recorded the last five outs of the game.
William Burford led HPU with three hits. Brayden Ferrie allowed eight runs in four innings to fall to 4-1.
In the nightcap, Howard Payne scored three runs in the second inning on a Carson Wert RBI single and a two-run single by Noah Coronado and Gary Blair made it hold up. He allowed one run over seven innings to improve to 2-1 and Bryson Adare worked the final two innings for his second save.
Nick Ellington drove in the only run of the game for the Cowboys on an RBI single in the fifth. He had two of the seven HSU hits.
Brandon Bane worked five innings and allowed three runs to fall to 1-6. Jaydon Stephens worked the final three innings allowing just one hit.
The Cowboys are 12-15 overall and 8-7 in league play. Howard Payne fell to 12-14 overall and 6-9 in conference action. HSU will host Mary Hardin-Baylor this week at Hunter Field.
