Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball rallied for a 16-15 win over the University of Dallas on Tuesday night at Hunter Field.
HSU trailed 4-0 after the top of the first inning but responded with three runs in the first. Gannon Azios had an RBI single. Colby Seltzer scored on a wild pitch and Karson Leatherwood had an RBI groundout.
UD went up 7-3 in the second inning, but Jett Forrest tied the game with a grand slam in the third sinning.
The Crusaders went back on top with a five run fifth inning and the Cowboys had to chip away. Kyler Reed had an RBI double and another scored on a wild pitch in the fifth. Leatherwood had a sacrifice fly, Forrest an RBI double and Reed an RBI double in the sixth that tied the game at 12/
Sam Buchkowski had a sacrifice fly to give the Cowboys a 13-12 lead heading to the ninth inning. However, UD scored three times Jake Amoroso had an RBI single, Caleb Hohman an RBI double and Fernando Davila made it 15-13 with an RBI single.
It did not take the Cowboys long to tie the game. Luke Kirkbride singled to start the inning and Tristan Laughlin pinch hit and tied the game with a home run to left. Seltzer then walked and Azios was hit by a pitch. After two pitching changes and two outs Buchkowski came to the plate.
He drove a pitch to right centerfield and Seltzer raced home with the winning run.
Five different Cowboys had two hits each. Forrest drove in five runs and Seltzer scored four times.
Wyatt Tumlinson earned the win in relief. He was the last of seven Cowboy pitchers and he allowed three runs but the offense bailed him out to give him the win.
Caleb Hohman, the fifth of seven UD pitchers took the loss. He allowed four runs in an inning of work.
Jake Amoroso had four hits, drove in four runs and scored four times for the Crusaders. Brett Castillo had five hits and drove in three runs.
The Cowboys are 14-17 on the year and UD fell to 14-16. HSU will hit the road to conference-leading East Texas Baptist this weekend.
