Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split its American Southwest Conference doubleheader with Mary Hardin-Baylor, winning 4-3 in the first game and falling 6-1 in the nightcap, on Friday afternoon at Hunter Field in Abilene.
In the first game, the Cowboys jumped to a 3-0 lead on a three-run home run by Colby Seltzer in the bottom of the third inning and Grant Mitzelfelt made it hold up.
UMHB scored a single run in the fifth inning and HSU responded with an RBI single by Gannon Azios. The Cru scored a run in the sixth and seventh inning each to narrow the gap.
Mitzelfelt went the distance and improved to 5-3 on the year. He allowed one earned run on seven hits. Andrew Aciemi fell to 3-3 overall allowing four runs in five innings.
Cole Antonelli had three of the Cowboys' six hits in the game. Connor Hagan had two of the Cru's seven hits.
In the nightcap, neither team scored through four innings before UMHB scored two runs in the fifth inning.
Rahul Champaner worked five scoreless innings to earn the win. He struck out six and allowed just two hits. Niklas Fenner worked the final four innings for the save.
HSU's lone run came on a Seltzer home run in the eighth inning. He had two of the Cowboys' five hits to lead the way.
The Cowboys are now 13-17 overall and 9-9 in league play. UMHB is 9-15 overall and 6-12 in conference action. HSU will host the University of Dallas at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
