ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' eighth-ranked football team rolled to a 47-3 win over Albright in the season opener on Friday night at Shelton Stadium in Abilene.
The Cowboys rolled up 628 yards of offense and limited the Lions to 269 yards. The Cowboys averaged 10.5 yards per play on the night, while allowing just 3.9 per play.
HSU took the opening drive of the year and went 69 yards in six plays with
Noah Garcia capping the drive with a 7-yard touchdown run.
The teams then traded punts and when Albright got the ball back
Matt Mitchell stepped in front of a Ty'Sean Heim pass and intercepted it. HSU then went 64 yards in two plays.
Gaylon Glynn hit K.J. Peoples for 35 yards and then found
Colton Marshall on a 29-yard screen pass for a touchdown.
HSU forced another quick punt and then went 69 yards in six plays again with Glynn hitting
Tailon Garrett for a 33-yard touchdown pass over the middle to make the score 21-0 with :47 to play in the first quarter.
Glynn threw his third touchdown pass of the first half on a 14-yard strike to
Goddy Pyeatt to make it 28-0 and the score remained that way until 10:02 to play in the third quarter when Albright scored its lone points on a 24-yard field goal by Dean Severin.
Marshall added a 46-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Glynn ended his day with a 37-yard TD pass to Pyeatt with 4:27 to play in the third quarter making the score 41-3. A,J, Hawkins found
Myles Featherston on a 19-yard screen pass for the lone score of the fourth quarter.
Glynn had a big night going 20-of-24 for 354 yards and four scores and he added 66 yards on the ground. Marshall had 106 yards on six carries. Peoples had his first-career 100-yard receiving game with 103 yards on four catches in his first start as a Cowboy.
Cade Michna led the defensive effort with 18 tackles. He was in the middle of trying to stop the Lions quarterback running game that had quarterbacks that weighed 260 pounds and 337 pounds. Mitchell and
Greg Hawkins had interceptions for the Cowboys.
The win was the Cowboys ninth straight win in season openers. HSU will travel to La Crosse, Wis. for next week's game against No. 12 UW-La Crosse.
