ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl soccer team defied the odds with a three-goal comeback, scoring three in the final 30 minutes for a 3-3 draw with the Trinity Tigers on Friday night at the HSU Soccer Complex.
The Tigers came out quick with a goal from Abby Schneider in the upper net to open 1-0 over the Cowgirls in the fifth minute of the game.
Things continued to go south for Hardin-Simmons, with another Trinity goal from a long through ball to Michaela Bosco for goal in the 16
th minute to take it to 2-0.
A great save from Trinity kept the score 2-0 going to halftime, and the Tigers came out for the second half with a goal from a corner kick in the 50
th minute from Emily Hayes for a commanding 3-0 lead.
The Cowgirl fire was all but fanned out until a great effort from
Kirsten Bush in the 73
rd minute, running down a passing lane from the Trinity keeper at her forward position and sparking the Cowgirl team with a goal.
The Cowgirls trailed 3-1 with less than 30 minutes to play, but the Bush goal sparked the energy for Hardin-Simmons, keeping on the attack for the remainder of the night.
With just five minutes to go, senior
Kaylen McNatt stole another Tiger pass intended for the midfield and ripped a goal from distance to make it 3-2 Tigers in the 85
th minute.
The ball had barley been kicked-off before another Cowgirl attack found
Lexi Templin on the back post alone with the keeper, who made an incredible deflection, but Templin found it for the third Cowgirl goal to stun the Tigers whose 3-0 lead was now a 3-3 tie game in the 87
th minute.
The Cowgirls nearly came away with another goal on a chance that was a step away and finished the game with a 3-3 draw against Trinity.
The Cowgirls shot 19 times with 11 on goal while Trinity had 16 shots with eight on frame, with the Cowgirls leading 12-5 in shots for the second half. Trinity had seven corners to four for HSU.
Haley Foley started and had five saves on goal for the Cowgirls while Lauryn Lewis collected eight saves for the Tigers.
The Cowgirls remain unbeaten with the tie and go to 4-0-1 for the year. Hardin-Simmons will host Texas Lutheran next Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the HSU Soccer Complex.
