ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl soccer team thumped the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets 5-0 for a win in American Southwest Conference play on Saturday night at the HSU Soccer Complex.
Mercy Mummert opened the Cowgirl day with the game-winning goal in the 12
th minute after assists from
Kalea Willis and
Kaylee Maddox off a corner kick. It's the first goal for Mummert this year.
Maddox added to the Cowgirl lead with her sixth goal on the season with a header down into the goal after a
Caroline Burrow assist in the 22
nd minute.
Gabby Aviles scored in the same minute to add the third Cowgirl goal with an assist in from
Taylor Koch.
Aviles scored her second goal after running it down to the endline and cutting back for a finish in the 48
th minute to make it 4-0 Cowgirls. Aviles leads the Cowgirls with nine goals now on the season.
Aras King got her first goal of the year with a perfect header goal over a leaping keeper after a ball in from
Mercy Mummert in the 57
th minute to make it a 5-0 final score in the Cowgirl ASC win Saturday night.
The Cowgirls commanded the game with 29 shots and nine shots on goal and ten corner kicks to lead their opponent.
Jenna Russell started in goal for Hardin-Simmons and went the distance with three saves in the shutout win.
The Cowgirls are now 10-1-2 and 4-0 in the ASC and will play host to the ETBU Tigers for another American Southwest Conference game on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the HSU Soccer Complex.
