ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl volleyball team had its best hitting night of the year in a 3-1 win over Howard Payne in American Southwest Conference play on Friday night.
The Cowgirls had 62 kills in four sets and hit .315 as a team on Friday. HSU dropped the first set 25-13 before taking the next three 25-12, 25-23, and 25-20 for the 3-1 match.
Hardin-Simmons struggled, and the Yellow Jackets came out rapidly to win the first set. The Cowgirls proceeded to hit .500 with 17 kills and just one attack error in the second set win.
HSU had 15 kills in the third set win and a commanding 22 kills and just four attack errors in the fourth set, hitting .391.
The Cowgirls also had the highest assist total of the season with 59 assists on the 62 kills.
Liz Underwood led the Cowgirls with 15 kills and hit .481 on the night.
Abbi Allen had 13 kills and hit .346 for HSU.
Jadyn Hernandez also led the Cowgirls in hitting with a .529 attack percentage with nine kills and no errors.
Ali Meyer had her best setting night of the year with 29 assists.
Keatyn Rodgers came in and had a season-best 23 assists for the Cowgirls.
Kat Martinez led the Cowgirls with 16 digs against Howard Payne.
Leigh Jespersen had 11 digs in the contest for Hardin-Simmons.
The Cowgirls improve to 13-6 and 4-2 on the year in the American Southwest Conference. HSU will host Schreiner tomorrow at 4 p.m.
