ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl soccer team defeated the Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru 2-1 in a thriller with two goals late to take the American Southwest Conference game on Thursday at the HSU Soccer Complex.
Kelsey White scored for UMHB in the 57
th minute after a long scoreless first half of soccer to make it 1-0 UMHB.
Things did not look in favor of the Cowgirls until
Taylor Garrett put a ball up high for a save that bounced to
Taylor Koch, who scored to tie the game at 1-1 in the 69
th minute. Koch scored her fourth goal of the year as a freshman against UMHB.
The Cowgirls had new life after the tying goal and earned a corner that
Kaylee Maddox hit back post to
Caroline Burrow, who gave a slight flick and found
Lexi Templin for a header to bounce in for goal and take the lead 2-1 for what would be the game-winner in the 82
nd minute.
Templin is up to seven goals on the year and leads the ASC. Maddox now has five assists and also leads the conference.
The Cowgirls had 12 shots with six shots on goal and UMHB had 21 shots with seven shots on goal. HSU led with six corner kicks to five.
Jenna Russell started in goal for Hardin-Simmons and had five saves in the win in full time.
The Cowgirls improve to 8-1-2 and more importantly 3-0 in ASC play and will face UT-Dallas on Saturday at 5 p.m. in a non-conference game.
