ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team fell 62-55 to St. Thomas on Friday evening in the home opener at the Mabee Complex.
The contest was close throughout, with eight ties and 12 lead changes. HSU led 50-49 with 3:41 to play, but the Celts hit the Cowboys with a 10-0 run over the next 2:40 to provide the knockout blow.
Neither team led by more than six points in the first half and UST took a 29-25 lead into halftime.
Trevion Howell's steal and dunk gave the Cowboys their biggest lead of the night at 48-44 with 7:42 to play.
HSU held the Celts to 35 percent shooting on the night but allowed 15 offensive rebounds that UST turned into 21 second-chance points.
Austin Brewer led the Cowboys with 14 points and
Chris Bryant posted a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds. He also had a career-high seven blocked shots.
Angel Johnson led the Celts balanced attack with 12 points and Marion Williams added 10 points.
HSU is now 2-2 on the season and UST improved to 3-0. The Cowboys will return to action on Tuesday when they host Concordia at 6 p.m.
