ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team moved to 3-0 with an 80-51 win over St. Thomas in the home opener on Friday night at the Mabee Complex.
Freshman Jacquelin Berry had a big night for the Cowgirls with 17 points, seven assists and five rebounds in her home debut.
Madison Williams added 16 points in just 21 minutes because of foul trouble and
Aiken Semones hit double figures with 10 points. Freshman
MaeSyn Gay added 10 rebounds for HSU.
The Cowgirls did a nice job of getting the ball in the paint and outscored the Celts 48-22 in the lane.
Williams came out hot for the Cowgirls as she scored the first eight points of the game to stake HSU to an early 8-2 lead. The Cowgirls did not trail in the contest. HSU pushed the lead to 23-10 after the first quarter and led 48-23 at halftime.
HSU was able to play 13 players and 11 of them scored. The Cowgirls shared the ball well with 22 assists on 30 made baskets in the game. HSU shot 48.8 percent from the field and held the Celts to 16-of-57 for 28.1 percent.
Kenna Gibson led a balanced attack for St. Thomas with nine points and seven rebounds.
The Cowgirls will return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. when they host Southwestern. St. Thomas fell to 2-1 on the year.
